NFT’s in the art world

Why I and many others think Cryptocurency is going to revolutionize the art market.

NFT EXPLAINED: NFT stands for Non Fungible Token in the crypto world. Bitcoin and fiat currencies are considered a fungible token. In other words, 1 bitcoin is no different from another, just like a $100 bill is no different from another $100. A Non Fungible token is something that is completely unique. For those of you who are visual, let me paint you a picture of this abstract idea. Imagine the NFT like a beautiful ribbon of unique code wrapped around the digital artwork you are collecting. Why is this valuable? It solves a problem that has long infatuated the art market. It creates a real time ledger of all the buyers of this unique piece, it allows for a public record of the art work that can never be changed or hacked. It authenticates from origin the history of the artwork as its collected.

I love this concept as an artist and think its revolutionary for artists rights. A NFT allows the creator to bake in royalties into this unique code. In the past, artists have really only been able to sell their work once. Then that art work gets resold into auction houses and to other collectors with the artist never seeing any of the resale profit. It’s been happening in extreme cases where artists sell works to collectors for $10,000 and then that artwork is flipped in auction houses for millions, with the artist never seeing any of that exchange. This is where we see really tragic stories of artists who get totally ripped off by elite institutions. Imagine an art world where every time the artwork resold, an artist gained profits for that work, as they should! Well that world is here now, and its putting financial freedom and opportunity back into the hands of the creator so the world can continue to enjoy the brilliant creations of that living artist.

BECOME A DIGIAL ASSET COLLECTOR : So, how do you get in on this digital art market? Some of the top sites for collecting Art NFT’s are “Rarible” and “Open Sea”. Artists are selling digital original art works on here as single works of art and collections with editions. You will need the crypto currency Etherum or ETH to purchase direct from the artist. Transactions happen instantly, and the collectible digital asset will then appear in your crypto wallet. The artwork will become “unlocked” at purchase and you can then choose to display it how you wish in your space. Some of these options would be using a projector or monitor to display the digital work.

THE FUTURE OF HUMAN HISTORY : Moving forward in Art History this will allow for total authenticity of original artworks. We will no longer be looking at forged and fake art in our museum institutions, which by the way… happens all the time!

I am excited to see technologies that support the freedoms of artists financial future and I’m thrilled to see a more direct interaction between artist and consumer. Personally, I have always wanted to squash the “starving artist” or “tragic artist” stereo type. Instagram already changed the art world drastically, putting more control in the creators hands. Now, cryptocurrency takes it a step further by allowing for instant transactions world wide, perfect record keeping, no forgery, and a chance for finical freedom for the artist while they are alive!

COLLECT MY DIGITAL ASSET : I minted my first NFT this week on the website Open Sea. I am using the pseudonym “KELKY” in the digital crypto world, but my profile will always list my full name, Kelsey Anne Heimerman. The NFT I minted is the image above with animation and its sold in a limited 33 editions for .5ETH .

KELKY’S ART EXPLAINED: I created this digital concept for the painting at the beginning of March 2020 during the lockdowns. I had been using sacred, tribal and cultural masks in my work for a few years, but this time the word “mask” took on a new meaning. An image appeared in my mind of people holding each other up and all our cultures being united. Though our history the masks we have worn through celebration, sacred ceremony, entertainment, sportsmanship, ritual, the rise and fall of civilizations, the wars, and now the pandemics have long held the story of who we are. Masks not only hide identity but can also be an extension of who we are. They are our alter egos, our divine spirits, our way of saying “I want to keep you safe, because I care about you.” They save lives, they are transformative, and expressive.
